The Level 5 Coaching Professional Apprenticeship is a practical, evidence-based programme designed to develop skills in active listening, feedback, mentoring, and coaching to enhance performance in the workplace. It is mapped to the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring, meaning successful apprentices gain two highly respected qualifications. The course combines theory with practical application, allowing participants to strengthen coaching practice, build confidence, and apply learning in real-world contexts. Delivered online, it offers flexibility, expert guidance, and professional recognition.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE Grade 4 / C or above in English and Mathematics
  • Right to work and study in the UK, with 3 years’ residency in the UK/EEA
  • Employer confirmation of Apprenticeship Levy funding
  • Role that allows engagement in coaching relationships

Those living and working in England, meeting residency and right-to-work requirements, and employed by an organisation able to access Apprenticeship Levy funding.

You must also have the opportunity to be engaged in a coaching relationship and display the behavioural attributes required of a coach, such as trust and integrity.

You must also have the agreement of your employer to undertake the required ‘off the job’ activity. This time permits you to study, complete tasks and meet with your University Tutors to support you in completing the required assessments.

  • Education Pathway: Mentors in schools and colleges supporting NQTs and trainee teachers (PGCE/ECF).
  • Professional Pathway: Individuals in public or private organisations with responsibility for leading/managing others, or aspiring to become professional coaches.

Through the Apprenticeship Levy. Levy-paying organisations can draw down the full course cost of £5,000. No fees are payable by the apprentice or employer if levy funding is available.

  • End Point Assessment (EPA), including observation with Q&A, interview supported by evidence portfolio, and knowledge test

Graduates gain the Level 5 Coaching Professional Apprenticeship and the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring, enabling career advancement into senior management, leadership, or freelance coaching roles. Opportunities include progressing to Level 7 Executive Coaching qualifications, specialist mentoring roles, or establishing independent coaching practices.
